Zapata was one of the leaders in the Mexican Revolution that started in 1910 against dictator Presidente Porofino Diaz. He was and still is a hero to the poor and indigenous people of Mexico. He operated in the south in Mexico and was more well known in the south. Pancho Villa operated at the same time in northern Mexico and that's why he is was more known in the United States than Zapata during the revolution. Mexicans in recent years have raised the level of praise and heroism for Zapata to a cult, almost god-like level.
