Will boilng water kill shrubs?

I want to clear by island in front of my house which is horrible with many weeds growing and gr , it is getting out of hand and looks terrible something has to be done. Landscapers want to much to clean it out. I want to kill the gr and weeds but not the shrubs . Will the boiling water kill the shrubs? How long before the weeds will grow back one I apply the boilng water? Also I need to kill the weeds growing along the curbs is boing water the best solution for killing these weeds?
