Why has the US government done this with the debt?

Watching these debt talks, it's like we only elected radicals from both sides. We need to cut spending, that's rejected by one side, we need tax hikes, that's rejected by another, we need a raise, something that should do is being undersold. It almost feels like the gov't is putting on a show, trying as hard as they can to gather support to both sides. I feel like if we have to sit through this for another presidency, can we please consider this all treason. It feels so wrong, like we lost all of this country's actual values.
