Why do people carry out m shootings?

I am talking about things like the Colombine shootings, the Virginia Tech Macre and the brian shootings in England etc. What drives people to carry out these atrocities and what is there motive for killing strangers? What do they gain out of it? Most of them kill themselves afterwards so maybe they just want to take a few people down with them but mostly it is strangers they kill. But why?
