Does a guitar chord progression have to follow a drumbeat/blines rhythm?

There are no general rules, so whatever sounds good to your ears. Technically, the rhythm guitar will usually follow the beat, but on lead parts, anything goes! With only one guitar in the band, just as you said, let the drums and b carry the rhythm of the music.
